The story
The city was established in 315 BCE and named after Thessalonike, Cassander’s wife and a half-sister of Alexander the Great. Its sheltered harbor and position on important routes helped it flourish.
Roman and Byzantine rule added new layers to its urban life. Surviving churches, walls and mosaics testify to a history much longer than the founding event shown here.
