Ships entering Alexandria surrendered their scrolls for copying; the copy was returned and the original shelved. Scholars on royal stipends edited Homer, measured the earth and catalogued the collection.

No single fire destroyed it. Funding lapsed, scholars left, and the institution decayed over centuries — the more ordinary way libraries die.
