The Royal Tombs of Aigai

Aigai — Vergina · Greece · Cultural · Classical Antiquity

The story

Aigai was an early seat of Macedonian kings and a place of royal ceremonies. Philip II was assassinated there in 336 BCE, shortly before Alexander succeeded him.

The tombs excavated near modern Vergina contain exceptional wall paintings and luxury objects. One richly furnished tomb is widely associated with Philip II, although aspects of that identification have been debated.
