Zhang Qian's missions west returned with intelligence about states the Han court had not known existed. Within a generation, caravan relays linked Chang'an to Samarkand, Persia and the Mediterranean.

Silk travelled west; glass, horses, Buddhism, paper, and eventually plague travelled in both directions. Almost no merchant walked the whole route — goods changed hands dozens of times.
