Rome Destroys Corinth
Ancient Corinth · Greece · Military · Classical Antiquity
The story
In 146 BCE, Roman forces under Lucius Mummius captured Corinth. The city was sacked, and its destruction became a defining moment in Rome’s domination of Greece.
Julius Caesar refounded Corinth as a colony in 44 BCE. The archaeological landscape therefore contains both Greek remains and evidence of the prosperous Roman city that followed.
