The Battle of Navarino

On 20 October 1827, allied warships entered the bay during the Greek War of Independence. Fighting escalated into a major naval battle among fleets anchored in close quarters.

The Ottoman-Egyptian defeat substantially changed the military and diplomatic situation. Greek independence still required further negotiations and conflict; the battle was decisive but not the sole cause.
