The Exodus of Missolonghi
Missolonghi · Greece · Military · The Modern Age
The story
Ottoman and Egyptian forces subjected Missolonghi to a prolonged siege in 1825–1826. Hunger and exhausted supplies brought the defenders to attempt an escape in April 1826.
Many were killed or captured, and the town fell. The catastrophe became a powerful symbol of the independence struggle and deepened international sympathy for the Greek cause.
