The story

Nafplio served revolutionary governments and became the capital under Ioannis Kapodistrias in 1829. Its streets became the setting for the difficult work of building institutions after years of war.

King Otto arrived in 1833, and the capital moved to Athens in 1834. Venetian fortifications and Ottoman-era buildings remained alongside the young state’s political legacy.
