The story
The traditional first victor, Koroibos of Elis, won a race of about 192 metres. For the next twelve centuries the games returned every four years, and Greeks dated events by olympiads.
A sacred truce allowed athletes and spectators to cross hostile territory unharmed — the closest thing the fragmented Greek world had to an international institution.
