Delos Becomes a Free Port
Delos · Greece · Cultural · Classical Antiquity
The story
In 167 BCE, Rome placed Delos under Athenian control and established a duty-free port. Merchants from across the Mediterranean gathered on an island already famous as a sanctuary of Apollo.
Prosperity left houses, mosaics and monuments alongside the temples. Commerce also included a substantial trade in enslaved people, an essential part of the port’s history rather than a detail to overlook.
