The Fortified Circles of Arkaim
Arkaim · Chelyabinsk Oblast, Russia · Archaeology · Early Antiquity
The story
Concentric walls enclosed dozens of houses, workshops and furnaces for copper smelting; the Sintashta people are also linked to some of the earliest spoked-wheel chariots.
Discovered in 1987 just before a reservoir would have flooded it, Arkaim became one of Russia's most celebrated archaeological sites.
