Leonardo Begins the Mona Lisa
Florence · Italy · Cultural · Early Modern
The story
Leonardo worked the panel in translucent glazes so thin that no brushstroke is visible, softening every contour into sfumato — 'in the manner of smoke'.
He kept the picture with him until his death at Amboise in 1519, revisiting it for sixteen years.
