The Industrial Revolution

Manchester grew from a market town of 25,000 to a city of over 300,000 in a single lifetime. Cotton arrived by canal and left by rail; the mills ran on steam raised from Lancashire coal.

The gains were real and unevenly distributed: output per worker multiplied, while life expectancy in the new industrial districts fell below rural levels for a generation.
