The story
The fortress held seven prisoners on 14 July. Its value was symbolic and practical: gunpowder inside, and the monarchy's authority outside.
Within weeks feudal privileges were abolished and the Declaration of the Rights of Man drafted; within four years the king was executed and the Republic at war with most of Europe.
