Constantinople · Istanbul, Türkiye · Political · Classical Antiquity
The story
The site was chosen for defence and trade: a deep natural harbour, water on three sides, and control of the strait between the Aegean and the Black Sea.
For over a thousand years the city was the largest and wealthiest in Christendom, and the reason the Roman state did not end in 476.
