The Fall of Tenochtitlan

Tenochtitlan · Mexico City, Mexico · Battle · Early Modern

The story

Cortés commanded fewer than a thousand Spaniards. The decisive force was political: Tlaxcalteca and other tributary peoples who saw an opportunity against Mexica domination.

Smallpox reached the lake cities in 1520 and killed a large share of the defenders before the final siege began.
