Mystras: From Fortress to Byzantine Capital
Mystras · Greece · Cultural · Medieval World
The story
William II of Villehardouin built a fortress at Mystras in 1249. Byzantine control followed in the thirteenth century, and a town developed across the steep hillside below it.
Mystras later became the seat of the Despotate of the Morea. Its churches, frescoes and palace preserve the artistic and intellectual life of a Byzantine world nearing its political end.
