Monasteries Above the Clouds at Meteora

Hermits lived in the region before large monasteries were established during the fourteenth century. Athanasios of Meteora is associated with the growth of the Great Meteoron community.

The monasteries were expanded and decorated over subsequent centuries. Their difficult access shaped daily life, while surviving churches and manuscripts reveal a lasting tradition of Orthodox devotion.
