The story

In 490 BCE, Persian forces landed in Attica. A Greek army met them near Marathon, winning a battle that preserved Athens from immediate conquest.

The victory became central to Athenian memory. The familiar story of a runner dying after announcing victory is a later tradition, not a securely documented contemporary report.
