The First Modern Olympic Games

The story
Athletes gathered in Athens in April 1896 for a new international sporting festival inspired by the ancient Olympics. The rebuilt Panathenaic Stadium provided its most recognizable setting.
The program and participation differed greatly from today’s Games: women were excluded, and the event was much smaller. Nevertheless, Athens established a model that developed into a recurring global competition.
